By letting students fail hard, will they really learn?

I marked my class’ lit reviews today – I thought they were well prepared (time management skills are a whole other issue..) but still some students really struggled. I know the onus is on the students to read well, write early and seek help, but what onus are we putting on supervisors? Especially when these are first-time undergraduate research students, who have been at uni for less than two years? Why don’t all supervisors invest in their (supposed) ‘future’?
